The road trip has come and gone.
The departure date arrived so quickly that I never did write the post so now that we are back home I'll tell you how it went.
It is not often that a mom (or a dad) has an opportunity to spend a great deal of time one-on-one with one of their adult offspring. That was something I was able to do beginning last Thursday. My son and I set out for a road trip to Orlando where his daughter would be playing in a field hockey tournament. Allegra flew down with the rest of her team, High Voltage from Fredericksburg, and we elected to drive.
We arrived in Orlando on Thursday evening and were eager to watch Allegra's first game the next morning at 8:00. Record low temperatures and the accompanying frost delayed the games for an hour. Once started there were numerous games taking place every hour of the day until about 10 at night.
Saturday there were more games and finally Sunday our return trip to Virginia. Fortunately my son and his family live only about 45 minutes from me. The two of us had a very nice time as did Allegra and her team. High Voltage lost their first game and won the remaining three. The girls also managed to squeeze in plenty of time at Disney World.
My suggestion to any of you with grown children, if you ever have the chance to get away with one of your kids, take it. These are gifts that are few and far between although Raga and I have had our share. I've had the good fortune to make three one-way trips cross country with Raga and assorted other trips here and there.
The years go by so swiftly and especially those of our children with spouses and children, do not often find the time to spend with us alone.
Treasure it when it happens.

Wonderful! I'm going with my daughter for a Get Motivated conference this am (Zig Zieglar and more!) and then off to Chinatown :) I agree...spend time....it goes fast. We don't do long trips but the little time is good.
Treasure any and all moments with family. They are gone too soon, and then we wonder .... why ....
Kate, I will second that thought about the years going by so quickly. I heard about those frigid Florida temperatures from family.
Kate, I will keep this in mind as I have a son moving to San Diego this month. I am sorta in the grieving stage. Never had a child move that far away. So this post touched me greatly.
Kate, What a lovely post and you couldn't be more right, the years go by SO fast. I was just speaking with my daughter about a road trip--and we both thought of Boston.

Hi Gary...We sure weren't expecting those temperatures. I had been monitoring the weather for about a week before we left and it looked like it was going to be pretty good. We had fun anyway.

Hi Missy...You're going to have to start planning some trips to San Diego.
The son in the picture left home for Stanford University. We were pretty sure that once he got a taste of California he wouldn't want to come home, we were living in Kent, OH at the time. He stayed out on the West Coast until he came east for Georgetown Law School then back out west.
Raga now lives in Fredericksburg less than an hour from me and has for some . You never know what changes life will bring.

Hi Carole...Boston is a wonderful choice. My daughter and I did that a couple of years ago, along with her two young daughters.
There's so much to see and do in Boston. The two of you will have a great time.

They have reminded me more than once that they want time with me, not money from me. Well, I make sure that's what they get! It's more fun for me too.
