Naturally we should be concerned about our hard drives at all times. However, when obtaining viable prospects is particularly tough it is especially important that we do not risk losing any of their contact information. Our computers are filled with information and forms that are the lifeblood of our businesses.
Having lost (totally) a hard drive once, I never want to go through that experience again. Has this ever happened to you? If so you know what I mean.
While reading Newsweek's latest issue I read an article that addressed a very inexpensive (do I hear the world FREE?) way to do this. Actually it is free. Without paying a cent you simply register with Mozy.com and you have the ability to backup your files up to two gigabytes of data for Free (there's that word again that we love so much).
Should you be interested in saving more data you can upgrade to Mozy's basic consumer package for a mere $5.00/month. This provides you with unlimited storage capability.
Although it can take a while for the initial backup once that is done Mozy will run in the background. Files will be backed up only if a change has been made since the last backup.
The Newsweek article mentioned another company, Carbonite, that provides this service also. I did not check out this site and there may well be others so you may want to do a search before deciding which one you want to install on your computer.
Mozy is busy working away on my computer right now. Put Mozy to work on yours and be safe. It's FREE.

Dropbox.com has a free one that is accessible from multiple computers. I like this kind of service.
I use an external hard drive that backs up in the background. I actually have two external hard drives and I alternate them, and let them back up for a week or so, then switch them.
I can back up a bunch of stuff on my Mobile.me account, but I may go the internet route too.
Good tip! Thanks.
I'll use it for the new computer- lost my ENTIRE computer on the day before T-giving! Not fun.
Kate, I have had computer woes, but my husband is so computer & tech savvy - I've maintained all my files & no serious crashes. It is very important to "protect" your hard work, and some would be very irreplaceable if lost. Thanks for the tip! - Carla
Kate~ That would be so horrible to lose everything from our computer...Thanks for the free information about the site! I am going to check into it!
Kate ~ I am a survivor of a hard drive crash! It was not fun. I got a Maxtor Mini external hard drive -- I think it was only $100.00 I love it! I wonder how secure these other services are -- can anyone steal or hack into the information?
Excellent info, Kate! Thanks for sharing with us!
I am always in fear of losing the data on my HD. I have asked Santa for a external hard drive for Christmas, but don't know if he will listen ....
Maybe I've been bad ..... :))
Hi Kate,
Great tip--I use Carbonite, not free but very inexpensive and is backs up your files automatically. You never have to think about it or remember to do it. LOVE IT! I think it is $19.95/year but don't quote me on that, I don't remember prices very well.
I tried Mozy, it didn't work. They kept having me send the data file, which I did. Then they stopped trying, and so did I. I hope it works for you, I know some people here who use and it and like it.
Kate, I'll check in to Mozy. Sounds like Carbonite might be another option. Now that most of my work is internet based, I have very little saved on my computers. Thanks for the tip.
Kate: This is great information. My contact database is saved with on my companies drives. THey have more backups than I will ever have. Still, I could personally benefit. Lost all of my digital pics once and I was depressed for a month.
Kate - Free is great! I'm one of those who has subscribed to Carbonite.com. My computer hasn't crashed (thankfully), so I haven't put it to the test. It costs $49.99/year. :)
Hi Shane...Thanks for sharing the information on Dropbox.com.
Kate
Hi Jack...I have an external hard drive also. It's in the box it arrived in. Typical me. That's why I liked this.
Kate
Hi Laurie...Nothing to be thankful that day. It happened to me also and it was the pictures I felt really bad about.
Kate
Hi Carla...You are one lucky woman.
Kate
Hi Vickie...I hope it lives up to our expectations.
Kate
Hi Joan...You raised a good point and I have no idea what the answer it. I certainly hope not! I never even thought of that. Maybe I should get my external hard drive out of the box after all.
Kate
Hi Carol...From what Santa has told me, you've been a very good girl, as usual.
Kate
Hi Cynthia...That is very reasonable. You can upgrade Mozy also but it costs more than $19.95 a year I think.
Thanks for letting us know.
Kate
Hi Missy...Well, I hope they let me know if it doesn't work. Probably a good thing to use the EHD also.
Kate
Hi Kay...I'm trying to get most of my pictures on the internet also as a safety measure plus it's great to be able to access them from other computers.
More and more of my information is internet based also.
Kate
Hi Chris...I'm such a wimp about my pictures that I keep buying media cards. I'm afraid to delete any of them. I also often put them on two computers plus I'm trying to send many to Picasa.
Yesterday I bought an 8 GB card. Talk about overkill.
Kate
P.S. When I lost my hard drive it was the pictures I mourned the most. Never again!
Hi Debi...Believe me $49.95 is a small price to pay for the peace of mind. Hope it's justified and that we never have to find out.
Kate
