Kids Learn from Parents...And Parents Learn from Kids

Kids learn from parents...and parents learn from kids.

When we moved to Lake Anna my real estate license was inactive. I was busy playing golf and working with an architect designing a home for my husband and myself. Life was good.

A short time later one of my sons and his wife decided they were ready to buy their first home. Marc asked me to reactivate my license in order to represent the two of them. At first I said no because they were planning to buy a place in Richmond, VA, not that far from us but a whole different market.

Marc and Kirsten

Not to be deterred, Marc explained to me that they knew what area of the city they were interested in and the fact that they wanted to purchase a brand new house. That meant they would be working with a builder.

I did re-activate my license and when my son and his wife found the small subdivision where they wanted to have a home built I helped them with the purchase. My initial thought was that I would be able to gift them with my commission. That was not what they had in mind.

Helping Marc and his wife opened my eyes to how much I enjoyed helping buyers. Yes, golf cart driving gave way to roaming around Lake Anna with folks interested in finding a home so they too could enjoy lake living. Twenty years later I am still doing the same thing and still having a great time doing it.

Sometimes children know best.

Hi Mary...Luckily we raised smart children that turned into even smarter adults. It's always nice to have someone you can rely on that is going to be honest with you.

Hi Kate Elim ,  What a great story and comeback.  You're right, many times we need to listen to our children and take them seriously.  We don't have All the answers.

Hi Larry...Thanks for your comment. You are right about us not having all the answers. Marc certainly helped me get back on track with real estate and I am very grateful.

I too have learned a lot from my daughter. Even when she was a wee little one. Aren't you glad that he talked you into helping 20 years ago.

Kate Elim many times they know lot more than us - so yes, we teach them what we learned through experience and they teach us what they have learned from their expertise.

It's a truly wonderful cycle of learning that goes on with people and we will have something to learn and something to teach.

A lot of spiritual teachings tell us to be like children and I have since realized that this is often true.

Kate that is a fantatic story about your son Mark --- how great that you could both help each other in important ways. How lucky to have a son who's so helpful to you (I have one too and know how lucky I am).
