There is very little, if anything, that I can add to Lola's post. She reminds us of the good that we can do for others. Social media can be much more than simply a way to generate more business for us. Hopefully you feel the same way. If not perhaps you will when you finish reading what Lola shares.
When I started blogging late in 2006, I could never have imagined the changes that would take place in my business. I certainly never imagined that something as simple as a blog post could impact thousands of individuals and cause some to make a contribution to a worthy causes. I simply didn't understand the power of a voice...
A voice is a powerful instrument. One which reverberates far beyond it's initial release. Nowhere is this more true than on the blogosphere where the 'voice' of a single blog post not only reverberates during it's initial release but continues to speak volumes over time.
In December of 2007, I wrote a blog post entitled: "A Christmas Gift You Can Drink Too", supporting the work of A Child's Right Charity and St. Monica's Orphange in making clean well water available to approximately 10 different sites in Kenya. Here in the West, we take clean water for granted. But for much of the world, the lack of clean water is a killer, one which quenches life, not thirst.
Today, this post has had over 14,000 views and over 12,000 clicks. I encouraged readers to take action and send in a donation. As a result of Blogging efforts on behalf of these types of projects, I eventually joined the Board of Mother's Fighting For Others, a charity which was started by Rocky Turner. Today Mother's Fighting For Others is not only providing clean water, but a safe home and education for over 40 young girls in Kenya.
You never know where a single blog post can take you or who will join you on the journey. On June 22nd, the Grand Rapids Association of Realtors will be hosting a Social Media for Social Good summit in Grand Rapids, MI. Jeff & Rocky Turner, who I met through Active Rain will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan to talk about the transforming power of Social Media with members of the Grand Rapids Association of Realtors. It's a topic we are just beginning to explore; a powerful influence which impacts the lives of people here at home and halfway around the world.
During this summit, we will move the conversation beyond what Social Media can do for ME...to how my influence and contacts can be used to support OTHERS. There is so much more to this medium than endless self-focus and banality. It's extraordinary to see how rapidly this conversation is growing online.
As people across the world are rapidly discovering, there is a higher purpose for our connections than the narciccism which sometimes drowns out the things which really matter. Our planet is astounded as we observe the struggles of the Arab people all across the Middle East and the way in which social media platforms are being used to enage and organize.
I think more and more of us are ready for more than just conversation...we want meaningful engagement with individuals who matter around topics which truly matter and interest us. I think we're ready to do something...something that creates the change that we earnestly desire. If you will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 22nd, 2011 put this date on your calendar. And if you're in some other part of the globe...well, Michigan is awesome in summer and we'd love to welcome you to Michigan's West Coast!
One last note, Mother's Fighting For Others is making this Mother's Day Doubly Special! For a gift of $25, you can support your Mom and recieve a handwritten note from one of the young ladies in St. Monica's Orphange. You have until April 24th, 2011 to personalize your card. Did you know that a gift of $25 can support a child for an entire month? You can donate at anytime by simply visiting the website. Now, that's making a difference in a way that counts for a lifetime.
