Doing the Mommy Thing is something I have down pat.
I should, I've been doing it over and over again for the past 48 and 1/2 years. That much practice should mean I have it down pat. Well, to tell you the truth I believe I had it down pat from the moment I got the first request from #1 child. That particular request came in the form of a cry. Now, the requests come in a verbal way that I can understand a little easier (sometimes I play dense).
Tuesday evening (late) I received a call from my oldest. What would he like help with? How about a
parking ticket for the U2 concert at the University of Virginia. (It started at 7:00 this evening.) He was taking his son to the concert, in fact doing his Daddy Thing. Reese was excited about seeing U2 but more importantly, he wanted to see Muse. Fortunately, I'm cool enough to know U2. Unfortunately, not enough to know Muse.
Well, what needed to be done to get one of these coveted parking tickets? A trip to Charlottesville to appear in person at the ticket booth. No way this could be done on the Internet, you had to be able to secure the ticket in hand according to the instructions from UVA. How far is UVA from my home?
Did I have anything else to do on Wednesday? How about meeting a client who was delivering a signed offer to purchase and an earnest money check at my office at 8:00 a.m. We went over the contract which I had e-mailed to him the evening before and then made copies. After I drove to the other office to deliver the contract (it was on the way to Charlottesville) and from there headed off on my mission.
Now, I had to be back in time to get home, pick up two 5 1/2 month old puppies to take to the groomer's. I ran out of time, called the groomer, she called another client and did some switching and so I was able to finally get them to her. From there I drove to the dentist for my annual exam and then to have my reading glasses fixed (lost a screw...from the stem not my noodle) home for a brief breather so I could handle the counter on our contract, and then off to pick up the "new and improved" pups.
Do you think running to Charlottesville, which took up a good three hours of an already busy day, phased me one bit? Well, it didn't. Habits are hard to break especially when you are not even trying. Somehow I find the time and the energy to do as much as possible for my children. No matter that all three are in their forties. They are still my children. I bought into the "Mommy Thing" a long, long time ago and I've had a ball with them ever since.
What is my reward? Knowing that I've made their lives a little less hectic and more enjoyable. I also get invited to many, many activities and even nice long car rides cross country plus plenty of phone calls just to chat and tell me how much they love me. I couldn't ask for anything more but I got more.
Thought you might like to see who benefited from adding more running around to my day. Here they are with a much younger me (let's see, subtract 15 from 72 and that equals 57...a mere child). Additional info: Reese's Mom, the happy mom, created the mat for me. Love that girl!

My son has the Daddy Thing down pat too.
