Does luck come into play in your real estate career? After reading a post by a fellow member in which she mentioned that luck did not have anything to do with her success I remember thinking that I looked at it a little differently. I still feel that way so decided I would write this about my thoughts on luck...hard work.
I posed the following question in my comment on that member's post. Is there such a thing as luck? If not than there is no such thing as good luck or bad luck.
I thought I would look it up in a dictionary. The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary defines it as:
b : the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual
I tend to believe there is such a thing as luck. I'm on Active Rain. I could attribute that to hard work or a bit of luck. I'd say it is a bit of both. After all if I was not on the Internet doing something related to real estate I would not have found this site. The fact that I ended up at a spot that led me to Active Rain was more by chance than design. I was not searching for a site for real estate professionals. I got lucky! And it was definitely good luck!
Plus I’m Irish…How Could I Not Believe in Luck
I'm sure there are brand new agents that have only begun their tenure in real estate and someone in their office suggested they join Active Rain. They did and before they knew it they received a referral. Did they get lucky that someone gave them great advice?
We have (hopefully) a great deal of control over the path our lives take but we do not have total control. We are always at the mercy of other forces.
I have had more success in real estate than I ever thought I would even through these lean years. Did I work reasonably hard? Yes! Yet this year, doing many of the same things I've always done that brought success, I have not done as well. Will it get better in the second half? I sure hope so. I'll work hard...in fact I've worked harder this year than last because trying to get business is much tougher than working transactions from start to finish which is much more rewarding. And yet, what is not the best year, so far for me, is better than many others ever have.
I am definitely not saying that the overall success that I have had here at Lake Anna is solely due to good luck. Far from it. However, I do look back and reflect how fortunate I have been. Do I deserve it? For the most part yes. I earned it. I also know that others have worked just as hard and just as wisely and not had the same amount of success. I am sure there are others that have done less and earned more.
It would be wonderful if there really was a direct correlation between effort and reward. There isn't always. Sometimes the reward is greater than we expected and other times it can be disappointing.
What would my reaction be to someone saying I was lucky in my career? I would have to agree. I would say, "Yes, hard work and some luck have combined to make this an enjoyable and monetary rewarding career for me." I would not take it as an insult.
Although luck would be a hard thing to prove all I know is when it comes my way I’m grateful...especially when it's the luck of the Irish.
